Hong Kong's average population density is 6,313 persons per square kilometre; this compares with the figure of 4,483 for London. However, this figure does not accurately reflect the population distribution, as approximately 80% of Hong Kong's land is unsuitable for development. The housing stock is predominantly of high-rise buildings; this has provided an immediate answer to the challenge of housing a large population in a small area and has been accepted as a necessity.
